Love It: JW Hol-ee Roller X Extreme

It wasn't until recently that we discovered the amazingness that comes from providing a dog mental stimulation throughout the day.  No longer do we feed Athena out of a food bowl, but instead we split up her meals into treat dispensing toys and training sessions.

Although not used to feed Athena a meal, we use the JW Hol-ee Roller X Extreme to feed Athena one of her daily essentials: a dental bone.  Athena is so in love with this ball and so are we.

The Hol-ee roller is a collapsable rubber ball that is extremely durable.  Unlike the original Hol-ee Roller, the Hol-ee Roller X Extreme has thicker rubber to stand up to powerful jaws.

We give Athena a dental bone inside of the Hol-ee roller and it takes her a whopping hour to get the thing out.  She rolls it around, squishes it up against walls, paws at it, and gets it stuck under the bed.  It is one hour of pure self-entertainment for Athena.

Inside of the Hol-ee Roller we put one Checkup Dental Bone broken in half so that there are two pieces for Athena to retrieve.  She moves her body in the silliest positions when trying to get her dental bone out of the ball.  I'm still baffled as to why she gets so excited over a dental bone because the things don't even have an odor!
Some of the many positions that Athena contorts her body into while playing with her Hol-ee Roller!

After an hour of Hol-ee Roller extraction, Athena is exhausted and ready for a long nap!  Have you ever tried the JW Hol-ee Roller X Extreme or a toy similar to it?  What did you stuff inside?

  1. Badger sometimes doesn't even bother chewing his dental bones. He just swallows them, thus completely defeating the purpose. We should get one of these for him!

  2. Great idea, I should try this with Boomer and Dottie!

  3. I have one of the original ones, which I've used as a tug toy (they work surprisingly well). But I've never put treats in it. I didn't even know they make a tough version.

    1. I've heard the original ones are great too. The original was actually recommended to us, but then we saw the extreme and decided to get it instead!

  4. Love it! We sell the original version at work - I'll have to mention the extreme version to my boss. It looks a lot more indestructible.

  5. What a cute pup! I also have a pit bull named Shiner. This toy looks amazing, it is hard to find things that take more than 2 minutes for my dog to destroy. Thanks for stopping by to read about Remy.

  6. I used to put apples in there until Elli figured out how to squish it so they'd come out really easily. I've used it as a tug a few times, too. I was surprised at its durability, too.

    1. Good idea with the apples, we have yet to try putting anything else inside besides the dental bone.

  7. Had the original one for Hank, lasted 10 minutes he chewed the thing apart trying to get to the treat. Got the Extreme and it definitely holds up way better but still a little nervous about putting something it, don't want to be ripped apart.

  8. How strong does it seem to be? Gambit needs very close supervision with his food toys, and the only toys I can really trust are his Extreme Kong and Nylabone Durachews. It sounds like a great toy and I'd love to try it, but with that amount of entertainment time it would need to be pretty durable for us.

    1. It seems pretty strong to me. We inspect after each play session and Athena has yet to chew any parts of it off or even make any teeth marks. She is pretty intense with the hol-ee roller, more than any other toy that we have, so it gets pretty beat up when she plays with it.

Not sure if it would take other dogs an hour to get bones out hough, Athena is so slow at food dispensing toys (frozen Kong extremes take her 2+ hours to finish)

  9. I'm going to have to get one of those. I've seen them but had no idea what the actual purpose was. I kind of thought it was a ball that was easier to grip when throwing. Hey! Stop laughing.

  10. Does it seem like it will hold up to chewing? Our boys both resort to heavy chewing if they can't get a treat out, and we haven't found a toy so far that has held up to them.

  12. We may have to try this, I love her goofy positions! I've only seen the very non-durable version in stores. I bet our local warehouse pet supplier sells this however. I'm not sure what we'd put inside if we used it. Maybe duck jerky? They don't get dental bones--if they make a grain free chicken/beef/lamb/soy/corn etc. free version I'd totally buy them!
