Dog Photography: Pouty Face

Remember when we went to Doggie Palooza with Emily from Our Waldo Bungie a couple of weeks ago?  Well, since then I have been checking my e-mail inbox every day in hopes that our Spot Magazine holiday photo would arrive.  I just knew that Athena's picture would showcase her signature "pouty face" look because she was not at all interested in climbing up onto a stage and posing for holiday pictures.

I was super excited when I finally received the photo yesterday and couldn't wait to share it with you all.  As expected, Athena didn't disappoint in the pout department.

I am also featured in the picture because Athena wouldn't stay up on the stage unless I sat next to her.  Looking at this picture makes me wonder how our Christmas photo shoot will turn out in the coming weeks.  I guess I need to start putting our new camera to good use and get Athena acclimated to being a star in front of the camera!

Any suggestions for successful dog photography sessions?  How can I get Athena to turn that frown upside down in front of the camera?

  1. Good luck with the Christmas photo shoot. I'm eager to see how it turns out without offering any advice. :-)

    1. I hope the photographer has some tricks up his sleeve for getting some better pictures than this one =)

  2. Start treating the camera's shutter sound like a clicker. Shutter = treats. Get cute ears and head tilts by using your dog's favorite words (I ask my dogs things like "do you want your breakfast?" "want a treat?" and "do you see it?", all of which are phrases they know and respond to). Make sure if you use those phrases that you are ready to follow through with something fun or good, like a good treat. And make sure you stop and reward your dog between pictures! Mine I will go 2-3 pictures between a reward, but then, even if they are still posing awesome, I need to give them something, or they will lose interest.

  3. YUMMY HIGH-VALUE TREATS!It also helps if the dog-tographer makes high pitched noises like "WHHHHHEEEEEEE!" - it gets the dogs' attention and sometimes they will tilt their heads, which is adorable!

But for the record, I think her pouty face is adorable!

    1. I will need to work on my "WHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Her pouty face is pretty cute, but I just wish she would sometimes give a little something else =)

  4. A smile often means panting! Make her run around and chase her ball a few times! ;)

  5. I was gonna say the same thing! Turn it into a play session and see if you can teach her ahead of time to do a down stay on the platform where she'd get her photo taken before you throw the toy again, if she's focused on the toy you can direct her focus in any direction!

But that picture is pretty dang cute already:)

  7. I always try and get in some serious exercise before taking photos. I've found that the more worn out Boomer and Dottie are the more likely they are to be calm, be more interested in treats and show a smile (pant) every now and then.

    Good Luck!

  8. This might sound weird but I will "Moo" at Hank in order to get him to perk his ears or tilt this head. Try a squeaky toy to get her attention but then again I have a ball addict so if I take his ball he will stare me down until I throw it, which gives me an opportunity to take some pictures. (I have a outside fall photo post scheduled for Friday, stop by and check them out).

  10. There are extremely a couple of kinds of against Belling gadgets that you can disregard, each with their own particular preferences and disservices. A standout amongst the wildest dogs barking devices is the shocking removed. It is trusted that this gadget is intense in light of the fact that it attempts to incur pain on the dog at each point the dog tries to bark. Regardless, there are other individuals who assume that shocking collars consummately get ready gear as long as they are not messed with. Everything is the recommended things here
