Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!

Athena isn't a very noisy dog.  She rarely full-on barks but instead will just give a soft woof if she feels the need to speak.  However, for what she lacks in the bark department, she more than makes up for in the yodel department.  That's right, Athena is a yodeler.  You know, like "yodel-ay-hee-hoo!"

You just really need to watch this video in its entirety to see the yodeling in action (or at least make sure you get to my favorite part starting at 0:50):

Athena's yodeling isn't so much a problem in the house as it is when she gets in the car.  Whenever Athena thinks we're in the car to take her to one of her favorite places (the park, doggie daycare, flyball practice, etc.) she starts to yodel.  It usually starts as a whisper yodel as she stares out the car window in hopes that the car turns down a street that will lead her to one of her favorite places.  If the car in fact turns down a road that goes to the park, doggie daycare, or one of her many other favorite locations, Athena's yodeling will increase in loudness until she completely drowns out the stereo and our conversation.

I love Bean - yodels and all!

I find myself saying, "shhhhhhhh" "shhhhh" "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh," during most of the car ride, especially when we get REAL close to the park (or other favorite place) because that's when Athena goes totally ballistic.  As you probably saw if you viewed the above video, 0:50 in the video shows the exact instance when Athena has realized that we are in fact driving to the park.  She yodels and dances all the way until we stop the car.

Bean LOVES the park

Now, there are many other locations that we frequent that just so happen to be along the same driving path as some of Athena's favorite locations.  This means that we get to hear yodeling even if we're not planning on stopping at the park.  I then feel guilty when Athena stops yodeling because I know that she's pouting that I so rudely didn't take her to a favorite place.

Is your dog a barker, a whiner, a yodeler, or something totally unique?

  1. So cute! Hurley whines, Sadie makes gremlin like noises & Maggie usually looks embarrassed by the 2 of them, that's how it goes in our car.

  2. That is quite the yodel, Thean! Turkey is also a yodeler! Rufus just cries and Moby barks when he is excited! :) Maybe I should record Turkey yodeling and do a mashup with Theaner to see if they can harmonize!

  3. We have a barker and a whiner. Thankfully, Edi only barks when he feels the need to let someone know that it is HIS house (and then we tell him he's a squatter). Tess whines a lot in the car...not sure when she starts and what kicks it off. She whines to be let out of her crate, and when we see other dogs across the street on our walk! Every once in a while we can get Tess worked up enough to let a bark slip out!!

  4. Rufus does this exact same thing in the car! Except for his yodel turns into a weird, screeching sound that makes me lose my mind haha. He definitely does the same pacing routine as well. I always joke that we need to take him to more awful places in the car (vets, dog wash, etc) so manybe he won't associate the car with so much excitement.

  5. Gambit whines, barks, chirps, whimpers, huffs, "talks," howls - nearly every noise possible except baying and singing. He cries when we get close to the park. Eddie's a barker, but we've come a long way in the car with lots of treats for being quiet. We're still working on going to the lake and sometimes have to muzzle him so the bark doesn't reach ear splitting pitches that distract whoever is driving.

  6. Hahaha! That is exactly what my Star does - every morning on the way to the dog park! Love it :)

  7. Pallo does the exact same yodeling on the way to the park. Koira doesn't yodel except for at flyball when she wants to run.

  8. I've always called it a "pained, excited whinny," haha, but my little Olly sounds like Athena when he sees another dog, or when we're getting close to the park/daycare/etc. My other one, Indy, doesn't make a peep when seeing other dogs, but he snorts and kind of grunts with excitement when we're at one of his favorite spots!

  9. Oh my that was awesome! Boomer is a whiner when he knows where we are going and will get Dottie started up too however when he sees other dogs at the park or wherever we're going he goes completely nuts, forgets his car manners and starts barking. He's such a big baby sometimes!

  10. Haha, that is so funny. As much as Kaya and Norman love our outings, the are pretty much apathetic in the car, even as we're pulling up!
