The Best Things in Life are (Not Always) Free

As mentioned yesterday, our weekend was filled with lots of doggie fun including the Coast to Coast Bully Walk & Costume Contest.  Aside from the festivities for National Pit Bull Awareness Day, we also stopped into our local Petco to say hello to one of our past trainers and enter their Halloween costume contest.  Wonder Woman Athena got 1st place in the contest and received a $10 Petco gift card, a JW Arachnoid Ball, and a goody bag filled with treats and pet body spray!

Some of our winnings!
B and I thought it was funny that we won the JW Arachnoid Ball, because as we were waiting for the judges to make their final decisions, we went around Petco and looked at all of the things that we wished we owned for Athena (mostly toys because she is spooooiled!).  We thought that the JW Arachnoid Ball looked pretty fun and we considered purchasing it.  So, we were so thrilled when we won it from the contest so that we could test it out!

So far so good...
Well, the testing only took about...5-7 minutes.  Athena went to town on destroying the ball as soon as we got home.  We were pretty disappointed because we LOVE the JW Hol-ee Roller X Extreme Ball and it has proved to be indestructible, so we thought the Arachnoid Ball would be similar.

These little green things sure look tasty!
Athena didn't have much interest in playing fetch with the JW Arachnoid Ball like she does with her Hol-ee Roller, so when I threw the ball to her she caught it and then sat down for a picking session.  She managed to pick off half of the little green knobs and killed the squeaker in only 5-7 minutes.  Boy am I glad that we didn't pay $11 at Petco for this very destructible toy!

I think I might pick them off one by one!
We aren't complaining though because 1) it was free! and 2) it gave Athena 5-7 minutes of pure picking bliss!

Destroyed...
But, unfortunately we do not recommend the JW Arachnoid Ball for any dogs out their considered power chewers or toy pickers (like Athena).  However, we do totally recommend the JW Hol-ee Roller X Extreme for its durability!  Back to the drawing board to find more indestructible dog toys...

  1. Thanks for the review, Duke would demolish that toy too! He destroyed an extreme kong in under 15 minutes once...

    1. What?! 15 minutes to destroy an extreme Kong?! Now that's a power chewer! Athena doesn't even destroy the red Kongs...knock on wood!

  2. Indesctructable is such a relative term in our household. The squeak in a squeaky toy usually lasts about 42 seconds and then the toy itself depending on the durability can last 15 minutes to 3 days. If I haven't spent too much on it, I'm happy that we've had the few days at least. Ray's monkey has been around since May and although it no longer makes noise, it hasn't been unstuffed and blinded yet either. I know exactly what you mean by being a picker. Ray will pick at anything he can until it is destroyed.

Too bad, because that arachnoid ball looks like fun, but not $11 worth.

    1. I'm impressed that Ray has had his monkey since May without unstuffing it or ripping the eyes off! Athena needs to learn his gentle ways!

  3. Athena had her eye on the prize, lol. I have that toy somewhere too. I think I have 1 of everything JW makes...Norman absolutely loves the tiny squeaky toys with feet. But my dogs typically rip things apart in 2 minutes or ignore them forever.

However, this toy has recently been "rediscovered" and they love it. Plus the plastic on the outside is really hard so they can't chew through it.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion on the toy! We will have to check it out the next time we go to Petco!

  4. Maybe she knew that you hadn't paid for it and that made it OK to go all destructo on? Ha! Wouldn't that be great if our dogs could intuitively know cheap/free toys from the expensive ones??? Dream world!

    1. Yeah, I'm thinkin' that she may have known that we didn't care about the toy too much so she figured she would just fully enjoy her time with it =)

  5. I've bought a few toys that were easily destroyed that the pups loved that I would maybe even buy again for the right price since they enjoyed them. It's hard to find toys that stand up to power chewers besides Nylabones! I will have to check out the Hol-ee Roller though... I love finding new toys! More than my dogs I think :/

    1. Yeah, we have given Athena a few inexpensive stuffed animals that have lasted a few days each. I would totally buy her more of them at a good price, because even though they don't last too long, she loves to pick at them and carry them around the house (and even tries to take them outside on potty breaks!)

  6. Indestructible, what is that? Actually Hank loves water bottles, juice and milk jugs (with all paper and caps removed) and those are "free". Recently got him some of Nylabone toys (http://www.amazon.com/Durachew-Double-Bone-Bacon-Size/dp/B005LE4QW8/ref=sr_1_108?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1351658219&sr=1-108&keywords=nylabone)I tend to get the ones that are made of really hard rubber/plastic they seem to last longer and there is the black extreme ball that has lasted but other than that most things are destroyed within a few days.

    1. Athena really likes empty water bottles too. I like that Nylabone that you linked! We will have to check it out the next time we are at the store! Thanks for your suggestions.

  7. Thanks for the warning! Badger is not gentle on toys either.
