Food dispensing toys have become a big part of our lives since cutting Athena off from her food bowl cold turkey seven months ago. Each and every morning, Athena eats her breakfast out of a toy and each and every evening, she eats her dinner out of another toy. Depending on our schedules and Athena's need for entertainment, she might also receive a food dispensing toy filled with a snack during the day as well. Since incorporating daily mental stimulation into Athena's routine, she has become a much more calm and relaxed dog.
Because we feed all meals out of food dispensing toys, it is important to us that we rotate the toys often to keep Athena entertained and challenged. This means that we've accumulated a boat load of different toys. While some of them have been flops, we have quite a long list of toys that we absolutely love and recommend.
We looked at our favorites and rated them using the following criteria. However, Athena had the final say in the order of the top ten!
Here's our top ten list of favorite food dispensing toys (counting down to the #1 best toy!):

The StarMark Bob-a-Lot was Athena's very first food dispensing toy. As you can see from the picture, it has many indents and scratches from Athena's teeth as she learned how to maneuver the toy. Because this toy is made from such hard plastic, the scratches have caused Athena to get a few nicks on her nose that have now scarred. We do love that this toy has two openings (one on the top and one on the side) and that the difficulty can be changed. However, it isn't as easy to fill with food and it doesn't open up to allow for a thorough cleaning.

We recently wrote an entire review of the new Kong Satellite (see it here). We love its unique shape which provides Athena with a different experience than the usual "nose bopping" toy. However, this toy is a bit difficult to fill with food and treats which also makes it tough to thoroughly clean.

We love the Kong Wobbler for how easy it is to fill with kibble because it unscrews at the middle. This also makes it very easy to thoroughly clean. The material of the Wobbler is excellent quality making it extremely durable. A major downside to the Kong Wobbler is that there is no way to change the difficulty, meaning that this is a very easy food dispenser for Athena.

Although a bit pricey, the Buster Food Cube is a hit with Athena. She loves to swat this toy all around the house hoping for her kibble to fall out. Unfortunately there isn't a way to change the difficulty on this toy, but it is rather challenging as is.

This toy has quite the kibble capacity and is unique in how its difficulty is changed. Kibble is dispensed from either end of the egg shaped toy, and each opening has plastic prongs that can be cut out depending on how difficult you want the toy to be for your dog. As of now, we haven't cut any prongs from the toy and it has remained EXTREMELY challenging for Athena (just the way we like it)!

This treat dispensing toy makes it to the top five of our list because Athena is totally obsessed with it! She probably loves it so much because it's a ball, but we love it because Athena not only receives mental stimulation, but she also physically exercises with this one. The toy is fairly easy to fill, although not as easy to wash out. Another bonus of this toy is that it is nearly silent when Athena rolls it around because of its soft rubber material (perfect for hardwood floors!).

It's probably no surprise that the Kong makes it to the top of our list of food dispensing toys. Athena would do anything to have a Kong a day to keep the doctor away. What makes the Kong Extreme so great is its mega durability (for Athena anyway, I know some dogs have been known to chomp the tops right off of this toy!). At one point in time the Contempo Tessa was our number one favorite food dispensing toy. As we've grown our collection, it has been surpassed by a couple, but still remains one of our favorites for its unique design and ability to change the difficulty. We love that this food dispenser has two food dispensing chambers that make it that much more challenging for Athena. It is also fairly easy to fill and clean.

Yet another Kong product makes it to our top ten list! This is similar to the Kong Extreme, but Athena especially enjoys its ball shape. The Magic Mushroom is our number one favorite food dispensing toy! Athena has loved this toy for many months and still has such gusto when playing with it. As you can see from the above picture, the mushroom has taken quite a beating, but it is still in great working order. Athena absolutely loves flinging this toy all around the house by carrying it around in her mouth (notice all of the teeth marks). She also gets excited and will swat it around with her paws. It's easy to change the difficulty of this toy and it's also easy to fill and clean.
But wait, there's more!:

All of her toys are in such great shape! Gambit eats out of a bowl once in a blue moon but not Eddie. We also consider "how badly will the boys want to try sneak in a little toy chewing during their meal?" and "can we open it without them figuring out how to open it too?" Eddie can open a Wobbler and Gambit can open a Kibble Nibble. Neither could open the IQ Treat Ball until they cracked it. We're down to Squirrel Dude, JW Treat Puzzler, a small Wobbler with the top chewed wide open, and an XXL Kong Extreme with the very top torn off.

DeleteThey are absolutely power chewers! All the food toy damage in 30 seconds increments when we turn our backs. Squirrel Dude and Big Yellow Ball are flexible enough that they don't try to power chew their way through them but have a low difficulty level for kibble.
DeleteI, too have tried the expensive puzzles and "super difficult" toys. Nah. My Lab goes through them in seconds and is bored immediately. He is great at working out puzzles.

ReplyDeleteWhat a spoiled dog! We have a few food dispensing toys- a few Kongs, a Buster Cube, a Tricky Treat ball, and an Orka Jack (which is the favorite here). But nothing compared to this variety! And they don't get used as often as the dogs would probably like.

I always think about wanting to bring them back -- but I just didn't know what to get and was frustrated spending money on toys that quickly end up destroyed. Thanks for the reviews!! We don't feed our meals this way since they eat wet and raw food and even frozen that would be a disaster, but we do make many snack kongs. Though our issue is also being considerate to our downstairs neighbors and trying to choose toys that aren't so loud. Any recommendations on that end?

Mom just got me the magic mushroomie one, but my regular kibbles are a little too big to fit, even when the holes are all the way open :( Luckily I get some fishie kibbles too that are smaller :)

Great post. Star has her breakfast in a XXL Kong extreme every morning, and sometimes dinner too. I'd love to add some other toys for variety, but our problem is that she doesn't eat much kibble. We are gradually making the transition to homemade food, which means more wet and gooey food and less hard kibble. Not sure how that would work in some of the plastic toys. Have you used wet food in any of them? We will have to go check out your links and see what possibilities there might be - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI have all these toys for my red heeler cattle dogs but here is one that I have that u do not it is called k9 snak a ball it holds lots of food and has several chambers inside the ball before it goes threw the one hole. It is made by a horse company called likit. You can purchase it from HorseLoverz.com they also have one call k9 wobbler but I have not tried it yet. Hope they add to your collection.

ReplyDeleteI bought a Kong Wobbler for my black lab about a year ago and she really liked it. But now it's just not enough of a challenge and it has all kinds of scratches in it. So after reading this I decided to buy the Busy Buddy Magic Mushroom. We tried it today and she loved it! It kept her busy a lot longer and she had a lot more fun with it. Thanks for the great list!!

ReplyDeleteI have a rescue dog who is about two and appears to have some lab, definitely some boxer, maybe some pit and probably some healer. I am looking for toys that make her work for treats -- I may think about feeding her that way after reading about Athena, but that's the next challenge. I do use the red Kong -- filled with peanut butter and a carrot in the middle (uses less peanut butter), then frozen. She loves that treat, but it only lasts for about 15 minutes, then she has no more interest in the Kong.
I have a purple Kong squeaky bone, but since she can't destroy it she has not interest in the toy.
During the days she is outside in a kennel (not a crate) and I even tried putting a bungee strap across the top of the kennel, then hanging a stuffy toy from another bungee with carabineer clips on both ends. That worked for a while and because she flipped the stuffy on top of the roof the toy lasted a couple of days. Then I tried one of the no-stuffing squares with the "tough" border. She got her paw into the border, pulled down the bungee and chewed through the bungee.
Any ideas for treat toys that might keep her occupied for more than 15 minutes, and NOT require daily replacement, would be greatly appreciated!
It is really a tough task to keep your pet busy all the time.

We have two dogs; one who gobbles her food, the other who destroys toys. I have had a "slow feed" bowl for the gobbler for a while, but she still finishes her food before the chewer. I bought the Tricky Treat ball today; the Chewer (Lisa) loves it; the Gobbler (Maggie) goes behind her and grabs the food. Maggie is not very interested in playing, so getting her to play with the ball to get the food out, will be a task.
ReplyDeleteThey are both rescues, and we brought Lisa home as a companion for Maggie, and to hopefully teach her how to play, because we were having no luck. We adopted Maggie in Nov'13; Lisa in June '14; they always wrestle, but Maggie is just starting to play tug with Lisa (Jan '15), but not us.

The magic mushroom is also a favorite of ours, I'm always looking for more toys but I already have almost all on your list! Another one I would recommend d to you is the tug a jug, I love it and it's challenging! For dogs that slobber more I'd recommend the one with a rubber handle versus just the rope because sometimes it can get sticky and the kibble will get stuck to it.

I have quite a few of these and also love them- the mushroom is a huge favorite, and he loves to fling it around as well! That being said, it's an issue because he now spends half of his time dropping it as hard as he can until the threading comes loose and it falls apart. It ruins the point of it when he gets it all at once, as now he's quick at it.

I have a VERY heavy chewer, and have been desperately searching for a treat/puzzle feeder that lasts more than 5 minutes. I tried the puzzle ball (#5 on this list), which he loves, but within that 5 minutes, managed to rip it open. I'm so glad you posted this list, though, so I can make a better decision when it comes to buying these things, as with a heavy chewer like my Winston (Brit bulldog/GR/Chow cross), it can get awfully expensive. It seems the Kong toys last the longest, and I've decided to try the Wobbler, and their Stuff a Ball. Fingers crossed....!
